Research interests
My main research interest is in wave propagation in heterogeneous media. Most of the problems concern waves in fluids. In particular surface or internal waves in coastal regions. Also, I am interested in atmospheric waves. From the more technical point of view my research considers systems of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) having variable coefficients, which model the medium variations, such as for example, a space-dependent wave propagation speed. Reflection-transmission problems naturally arise in this context. Also, issues concerning the eddy viscosity for waves propagating over a turbulent region. This research area branches into topics such as:
- Asymptotics at the PDE level, namely mathematical modelling aiming at obtaining (more tractable) reduced models for which one can perform careful analysis
and accurate numerical simulations. - Asymptotics at the level of solutions, leading to (approximate) effective behaviour of the waves in, for example, a rapidly varying medium.
- Scientific computing which is used to provide insights regarding items (1)-(2)
above, as well as to validate theoretical results.
