Second SCAT grantee to complete mobility

Aug. 2007 — Leonardo Gordillo, a graduate in Astronomy and currently MSc student at the University of Chile, has completed a 9 month stay in Paris. He worked on the simulation fo drop formation, under the supervision of Prof. S. Zalesky and Dr. C. Josserand at Universite Pierre et Marie Curie.

SCAT grantee to do PhD funded by BAE

Jul. 2007 — SCAT grantee Felipe Cruz will continue in Bristol, as a PhD student. His funding has been secured by an unprecedented grant from BAE Systems / Airbus, under the Centre for Fluid Mechanics Simulation (CFMS) initiative. This project aims a huge increase in fluid simulation capability by 2012.

The future of EU-LA collaboration

May 2007 — SCAT was one of 50 ALFA projects selected for its quality as a model of "best practice". As such, it was invited to participate in a unique meeting to design the strategy for academic collaboration between Europe an Latin America, which took place in Mexico City, 21-22 May 2007.

4th SCAT selection process fully online

Apr. 2007 — For the first time, the SCAT grant holder selection process was held entirely online. The first three rounds of selection were finalized in a SCAT meeting; this time, we used an online environment to post all the application documents, and hold online discussions.

The first Interim Report is sent to Brussels

Mar. 2007 — The SCAT coordination office has worked hard to produce the first Interim Report, describing the activities of the first 14 months of the project. In this period, we have awarded 8 grants in three rounds of selection, held four SCAT meetings and one summer school, and disseminated the project activities widely in press and the internet.

SCAT grantee returns home and starts his PhD

Feb. 2007 — The first SCAT grantee to finish his mobility is Helmut Wahanik. He returns to Rio de Janeiro to pursue a PhD at IMPA under the supervision of Prof. André Nachbin. In Bristol, he spent six months as part of the Fluids Group in Applied Mathematics, working with Dr. Lorena Barba in spectral methods applied to vortex dynamics.

Jan. 2007 — Here is one happy camper! Felipe Cruz, currently doing a SCAT mobillity at University of Bristol with Dr Lorena Barba, has been awarded the Apple Prize. He is now the delighted owner of a brand new MacBook, with Intel Core Duo inside!

SCAT mobility grants announced

Jan. 2007 — There will be three more SCAT grantees commencing their mobilities soon in Europe. Luis M. de la Cruz, a physicist with PhD in Computer Science, will do a postdoc at Daresbury; he is from UNAM. Two MSc students from Universidad Santa María (Chile), Claudio Torres and Guillermo Oyarzún, were also awarded a grant.

First Latin American SCAT Workshop and School

Jan. 2007, Valparaíso — Focused on Advanced Scientific Computing and Applications, this event included a series of lectures on parallel computing, computational fluid dynamics, parallel scientific libraries (esp. PETSc) and applications such as turbulence, microfluidics, granular flows and nanostructures.

SCAT Apple Prize (PDF announcement)

Dec. 2006 — The official announcement of the SCAT Apple Prize, which was offered at the Daresbury meeeting (June). The best SCAT grantee of 2006 will receive a gift of a fabulous new MacBook, courtesy of Dr Massimo Marino, European Research & Scientific Programs, Apple EMEA.

André Nachbin awarded National Science Medal

Nov. 2006 — SCAT member André Nachbin from IMPA was awarded the National Science Medal of Brazil, in the category of Mathematical Sciences. The medal, in Portuguese Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico, is awarded by the President. The Brazilian Academy of Science has published André's curriculum vitae and bio online.

SCAT Project is One year old

25 Nov. 2006 — SCAT has completed its first year! We have carried out three international meetings (Barcelona, Daresbury, Paris), and awarded five mobility grants (one declined). We have experimented with podcasting and video conferencing, and identified difficulties and solutions. Most of all, we have gotten to know and like each other better!
